Wedding Dresses

Wedding dresses are changing. There’s little doubt that many women are moving away from the traditional wedding dress, opting for something more unique that will set their big day apart from the rest.

Traditional wedding dresses as we know them today, are the direct descendent of a style set by Queen Victoria when she married Prince Albert around 1840. She is directly responsible for the white color of the wedding dress, many following in her footsteps after she married. Prior to this, women typically wore dresses of varying colors when they married.

The white color is said to resemble the innocence of girlhood, and her unsullied heart, now handed over to her chosen one. Today’s bride however, is showing a trend of slowly moving away from that tradition however, as more and more brides begin to select colored dresses, with some making a statement by choosing bright, vibrant colors.

So-called non-traditional wedding dresses can add interesting touches to a wedding. To be sure, the practice is yet un-common enough that it still raises some eyebrows, but those who have been bold enough to do so, have pulled off some very beautiful weddings when doing so. One thing that should be kept in mind when you are choosing non-traditional wedding dresses is that you will not necessarily be shopping in the typical bridal shop, though there are some who are relenting and adding non-traditional lines to their offering.

The most important thing when selecting wedding dresses is to keep your own tastes in mind. The wedding day is all about you and your groom, and so should be planned according to what it is that you two like, as opposed to what anyone else thinks should or should not be there. A good bridal shop will know all the latest style and hottest trends, so while you may not ultimately purchase a dress from them, they are still one of the first places you will want to look for wedding dresses, because styles change annually, and seasonally.

Even when a shop doesn’t have the styles of wedding dresses that are most interested in, you can bet that they will have books loaded with different style, and yes, even colors that you can look at. Helpful clerks will go out of their way to help you find exactly what it is you are looking for hoping that they will ultimately land the sale. They will generally be most happy to order a style that they may not carry normally especially for you. You will want to take care that anything specially ordered for you is exactly what you want, because there may be no recourse for special orders.

Check return policies before making any special orders, as you may ultimately end up with something you do not want. Wedding dresses that are typically white, may be possibly colored at the manufacturer in the case of your finding a style that you like, that is traditionally white only. Do not be afraid to ask the clerk of your chosen shop. They will know exactly what can and cannot be done.
